Exploring admission requirements for Shepherd University

Hey guys, Shepherd University is definitely one of the institutions at the top of my list, but I'm not sure what they'd be looking for in terms of grades, extracurriculars, or other admission requirements. Anyone have any info or tips?

You're right to seek out specific admission requirements to better understand what Shepherd University might be looking for in its applicants. While they don't publish an explicit Academic Index value (a composite score colleges use to filter applicants), comparing your academic profile to those of admitted students can give you a good sense of where you stand.

Academically, Shepherd University adopts a holistic approach to admissions, but average GPA and test scores can give you some context. The average GPA for Shepherd is approximately 3.4. SAT and ACT scores feature prominently in their selection process, with the average SAT score lying between 960 and 1160, and the ACT score between 19 and 26. However, bear in mind that these are averages and not minimum requirements, so don't be discouraged if your scores fall slightly below this range.

Shepherd University also places value on your high school course rigor. Advanced courses in your transcript, such as AP or honors classes, can strengthen your application. Even if your scores are not top-notch, showing that you are challenging yourself academically is viewed positively.

That being said, academics are not the only component of your application. Your extracurricular involvement also matters. Shepherd, as with most universities, appreciates students who demonstrate passion and commitment through their extracurricular activities. The 4 Tiers of Extracurriculars can provide some guidance here. Activities that fall into Tier 1 and Tier 2 are impressive and desirable, but even Tier 3 and Tier 4 activities, if pursued consistently and passionately, could add value to your application.

Finally, the application to Shepherd will also usually include an essay component. This is a fantastic opportunity to share more about your experiences, challenges, passions, and dreams, beyond what can be put into numbers or list items on your application.

It's important to remember that these are general guidelines, and admission results can vary. All parts of your application, and how they collectively portray you as a well-rounded and dedicated student, matter when admission committees review your application. Good luck!
